Check out this Barbie Video
Did you notice something?
Yea, nothing in this video even remotely resembling a Pediatrician. It is more like a mom or dad painting the nursery and rocking the baby to sleep. No mention of Biology, Chemistry, Blood, Death, Dying, Rotations, Being on Call, Medical School, Bile, Cadavers, student loan debit, etc.
If not mom or dad and I had to peg Barbie with a career based on how she describes her day, I would say Child Life Therapist.
Please if you know anyone who is going to college to be a doctor or nurse because they want to work with children (sick children), https://www.childlife.org/" target="_blank">Child Life Therapy may be what they are actually invisioning.
They can also check out degrees in Child Development, Social Work, Sociology, Psychology, Anthropology, Human Services, Counseling, Art Therapy, Plant Therapy, Music Therapy, Animal Therapy, Journal Therapy, the list goes on and on.
Have them take a look at the MCAT, the test they need to pass to get into med school. I wish I would have seen this before I majored in pre-med. Utter GREEK to me. I never would have wasted my freshman year as a bio/chem major.
If they have no idea what they are looking at nor do they have an interest in learning what they are seeing, chances are, they have choose the wrong major! They may have an interest in just helping people not MEDICINE!!
Barbie makes it seem so darn easy! Child life therapy is not easy, but it definatly is not medical school and they will have more time to hold the babies, paint the walls pink, etc.
Thanks Barbie for your ever inspiring Career Wisdom! You keep me employed!
